TERRY GILLESPIE & THE GRANARY BLUES BAND

www.terrygillespie.ca

Righteous blues spiced with funk, reggae, country & jazz. New CD in Canada’s Top 10 Terry Gillespie (singer, songwriter, guitarist) was born in Edmonton, raised in London, spent time in the U.S. learning blues from the masters then moved to Ottawa in the late ‘70’s and helped establish the vibrant blues scene here. Many will remember his “Heaven’s Radio” recordings from that era. His fans include Sue Foley who used to sneak into blues clubs in her teens to catch his Shows.

Terry disappeared into the wilds of southeastern Ontario for a couple of decades but in 2001 he united with a great group of veteran blues artists from Montreal - Stephen Barry on bass, Gordon Adamson drums, Peter Measrock keyboards and Martin Boodman on harp – and released a superb comeback album in 2006 “Brother of the Blues” which received major critical acclaim in both Canada and the U.S.

A sweet tiramisu of liquor-soaked layers of blues, reggae, country, and jazz' . Richard Ludmerer, New York Blues & Jazz Society and a regular contributer to BluesWax.com

"Terry Gillespie is one of the most sincerely talented musicians in Canada. He's a bluesman to the core, but not in the traditional sense for he has range and influences that take it to a whole new level”. Sue Foley

January 18/19 -DAVID ROTUNDO BAND

www.davidrotundo.com

Another brilliant young Canadian artist, David Rotundo was inspired to take up the harmonica after seeing James Cotton perform at the El Mocambo in 1991. He then traveled through the states for several years visiting blues hotbeds like New Orleans, Clarksdale, Austin, Memphis and Chicago learning how to play. On his return to Toronto in 1997 he formed David Rotundo & The Blue Canadians and proceeded to rip up the blues circuit. He has recorded two excellent albums with another on its way soon and has been nominated repeatedly for Maple Blues

Awards for Best Harmonica Player of the Year, won Best New Artist of the Year in 2002 and the CBC’s Galaxie Rising Star Award. His band is extremely tight featuring having played together for years with David on vocals & harp, Dan Dufour on lead guitar, Des Brown on guitar, Shane Scott on bass & vocals and Chuck Keeping on drums.

April 18/19
ANDERSON/SLOSKI
with Special Guests
SHAKURA S’AISA & BROOKE BLACKBURN

Lance Anderson
, besides being a great songwriter, producer and record company President is also one of (if not THE) best Hammond B3 organ players in the country playing bass runs on the foot pedals with his feet while his hands dance on the keyboards. He formed a duo with well know roots drummer Mike Sloski and produced an album aptly named “Footwork” that garnered two Maple Blues Award nominations and praise from many sectors of the music industry. It’s hard to believe that two guys can lay down such a big sound. They are joined by two very Special Guests for this Show: Shakura S’Aida - born in Brooklyn this beautiful singer has been a mainstay of the Toronto blues, jazz and R&B scene for over 20 years and finally has her own CD “Blueprint” out to showcase her talent. Brooke

Blackburn is a fine guitarist from Toronto who often accompanies Shakura. This is a very talented, power-packed quartet to say the least!

"On Footwork, drummer Michael Sloski and organist Lance Anderson mine heavy grooves with a dancer's touch. This wonderful mix of Blues, R&B and Funk is mostly instrumental and completely enjoyable." Jeff Calvin - Blues Revue

“Shakura was the next performer and Lance Anderson joined in. She had the whole audience under her spell and her backup band was unbelievable. In all my years of going to Tremblant (been going right from "The Canadian Blues Summit" in 1993), I have never seen a performer enthrall an audience the way she did on Sunday night. If she performs only half as well at The Cove you certainly have a treat in store for everyone!”
Mike Oxley, BOTR attendee comments after seeing Lance & Shakura at the 2007 Tremblant Blues Festival

March 16 - JULIAN FAUTH BAND

To prove that blues is now a global genre we bring you Julian Fauth – German born, Kensington Market trained - a superb piano player, guitarist and harpist with a voice that reminds you of the old field holler blacks in the Mississippi Delta. Julian plays blues, roots and barrelhouse jazz with abandon and “occasional flights of insanity”. His love for the blues, study of the old masters and constant playing has honed him into one of the best new young artists in the country. He travelled to

Russia in 2002 with David Rotundo (whom he has played with for many years) and Cuba that same year where they were very enthusiastically received. His debut CD on ElectroFi in 2005 “Songs of Vice & Sorrow” earned praise from many quarters and a new CD should be out in time for this Show. Julian will be backed by two very accomplished Toronto musicians - Bob Vespaziani on drums (who played with Mark Bird Stafford at The Cove last December) and Jay Danley on guitar (and possibly another Special Guest

“I heard another John Mayall… he merges strong, jangle piano and field holler vocals, built around lyrics depicting an urban mythos of midnight mist and loneliness, somehow spiced with humor and flirtations with much deeper blues and jazz than one would expect of a bandstand act. One cannot overpraise this release..”
Arthur Shuey, Bluesource.com

“Fauth is a killer on the keys, an extraordinarily convincing singer, an impressive harpist, and an outstanding songwriter whose familiarity with the entire blues canon allows him to appropriate bits and pieces at will - lyrics, hooks, rhythms - and blend them into a whimsical, lopsided, sinister, occasionally comic, and utterly original whole
. Greg Quill, The Toronto Star

June 20
FINIS TASBY & BAND

What a way to close out the 2007/08 Season! Finis (pronounced finest) Tasby is blues royalty – one of the best vocalists in the business today. Born in Dallas in 1940 he started his own band The Thunderbirds in 1962 backing famous bluesmen Z.Z. Hill, Clarence Carter, Lowell Fulson and Freddie King as they toured throughout Texas and Oklahoma. He moved to L.A. in 1973 and quickly meshed into the west coast blues scene opening for major acts like B.B. King, Percy Mayfield and Big

Mama Thornton. He also met and formed a life long friendship with John Lee Hooker. In the mid ‘90’s Finis cut his first album “People Don’t Care” on Shanachie and has recorded several since including his most recent on ElectroFi (2005) entitled “What My Blues Are All About” - a true gem. He is also part of the great band The Mannish Boys. To get an idea of the treat you are in for if you are lucky enough to get a seat for this night check out “Save A Place For Me” on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0WdflUCdk8 - a beautiful song with Finis on vocals, Julian Fauth on keyboards, Enrico Crivellaro on guitar, David Rotundo on harp, Alec Fraser on bass and Jimmy Boudreau on drums. For this Show Finis will be backed by 3 excellent Toronto area players – Bob Vespaziani (rapidly becoming a fixture at The Cove) on drums, Shane Scott on bass and Pete Schmidt on guitar. It may sound clichéd but his will be ANOTHER great Blues On The Rideau night to remember at The Cove. Reserve your seats now!

“Finis Tasby sings every song from the position of the truth. His leathery vocals are born from livin’ the blues, so when he sings, you can’t help but listen”
Art Tipaldi, Boston Blues.com

“Finis Tasby is unquestionably one of the most soulful and dynamic blues singers working today” Scott Dirks, cdbaby.com
